The myriad roles of the immune system in maintaining health continue to be illuminated, highlighting the importance of studying human immunology. Innovative tools and technologies have expanded our ability to study even rare immune cell populations present in limited clinical samples. These advances will be key for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to promote immune health and combat disease.

Sydney Ramirez, M.D., Ph.D., and her team study human immunology, with an emphasis on upper airway immunity and immune memory in the contexts of health and disease. The upper airway serves as an entry point for many infections and environmental insults, and local immune cell populations present in these tissues are poised to play important roles in surveillance and protection. By studying mucosal immunity and how mucosal immune memory is generated and maintained, we can gain a more complete understanding of the body’s complex and multi-layered immune defenses.
