In type 1 diabetes (T1D) the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Although genetic predisposition is important, environmental factors, such as viral infections play a critical role in triggering the disease. Dr. Benkahla wants to know how Roseola virus (HHV6) contributes to T1D in hopes of using his insights to prevent or reverse the disease.
