On May 13, 2020, one of the “world’s most cited researchers” and immunology expert Alessandro ‘Alex’ Sette, Dr. Biol. Sci. shared his research efforts and observations from the field regarding the coronavirus and COVID-19. Institute leadership and experts President & CSO Mitchell Kronenberg, Ph.D. and Executive Vice President & COO Stephen S. Wilson, Ph.D. also provided their insights during the virtual discussion. The presentation concluded with a Q&A, with questions from webinar participants.



Typically, when our immune system encounters a pathogens it mounts a specific immune response that fights off the infection. But not only that, it “remembers” the encounter and next time we encounter the same pathogen, we can fend it off before we get sick. But there are exceptions to the rule and there might be chance that the immune memory of COVID-19 only lasts a short time or that the immune response is not strong enough to prevent re-infection. Coronavirus Potential Targets Identified
On March 23, 2020, The Washington Post highlighted the collaborative research of Dr. Alessandro Sette, which provided the first analysis of potential targets for effective immune responses against the novel coronavirus. This finding was made with Institute Principal Investigator, Dr. Bjoern Peters, in collaboration with researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute. On March 11, 2020, Northern Trust San Diego hosted the Known Coronavirus and the Unknown livestream panel presentation featuring expert guest speakers.
