Visionaries Presents Life Without Disease
The Visionaries, an award-winning public television series hosted by Sam Waterston has recently launched its 24th season which includes a half-hour documentary film entitled, Life Without Disease. The film showcases the critical work of La Jolla Institute for Immunology scientists working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. La Jolla Institute launched a virtual premiere of the film on August 25th featuring Q&A with the featured scientists and filmmaker Jody Santos.

Dr. Fauci Congressional Hearing
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, testified today before a House subcommittee on the nation’s coronavirus response. He referenced pioneering research from the labs of Dr. Sette and Dr. Crotty on T cell responses to COVID-19 as “work we really need to pursue. We’re just at the cusp of really understanding the importance of this type of response in COVID.”

Coronavirus Updates: Live from the Laboratory with Erica Ollmann Saphire, Ph.D. | Reporting Back
On June 26, 2020, infectious disease expert Erica Ollmann Saphire, Ph.D. shared her COVID-19 research efforts and observations from the field. She highlighted the global Coronavirus Immunotherapy Consortium (CoVIC), which she was asked to lead by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is generously funding CoVIC with Wellcome and the MasterCard Impact Fund. Institute leadership and experts President & CSO Mitchell Kronenberg, Ph.D. and Executive Vice President & COO Stephen S. Wilson, Ph.D. also provided their insights during the virtual discussion. Behind-the-scenes access to the Institute’s state-of-the-art technology empowering its COVID-19 research efforts was virtually provided to webinar participants. The presentation concluded with a Q&A, with questions from participants.

On May 13, 2020, one of the “world’s most cited researchers” and immunology expert Alessandro ‘Alex’ Sette, Dr. Biol. Sci. shared his research efforts and observations from the field regarding the coronavirus and COVID-19. Institute leadership and experts President & CSO Mitchell Kronenberg, Ph.D. and Executive Vice President & COO Stephen S. Wilson, Ph.D. also provided their insights during the virtual discussion. The presentation concluded with a Q&A, with questions from webinar participants.



Typically, when our immune system encounters a pathogens it mounts a specific immune response that fights off the infection. But not only that, it “remembers” the encounter and next time we encounter the same pathogen, we can fend it off before we get sick. But there are exceptions to the rule and there might be chance that the immune memory of COVID-19 only lasts a short time or that the immune response is not strong enough to prevent re-infection. Coronavirus Potential Targets Identified
On March 23, 2020, The Washington Post highlighted the collaborative research of Dr. Alessandro Sette, which provided the first analysis of potential targets for effective immune responses against the novel coronavirus. This finding was made with Institute Principal Investigator, Dr. Bjoern Peters, in collaboration with researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute.
